Morning Azkar: Arabic Text, Transliteration and Benefits

Man praying at sunrise with open hands in supplication

The morning azkar (أذكار الصباح — adhkar as-sabah) are supplications recited after the Fajr prayer, until the sun fully rises. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever says 'Subhana Allahi wa bihamdihi' one hundred times in the morning and evening, no one will come on the Day of Resurrection with anything better — except someone who said the same or more." (Muslim no. 2692). These brief yet powerful words form a spiritual shield for the entire day.

Key Points

  • Morning azkar are recited after Fajr prayer, ideally before the sun fully rises
  • They form a wird (وِرد) — a daily devotional practice consistently recommended by the Prophet ﷺ
  • Every azkar has an authentic source: Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi or Nasai
  • Some are recited once, others 3 times or 100 times — the count is part of the Sunnah
  • Ayat al-Kursi and the three Quls (surahs 112–114) provide comprehensive protection against harm
  • Sayyid al-Istighfar is the greatest form of seeking forgiveness — understanding its meaning is essential
  • Consistent daily practice outweighs occasional exhaustive sessions
  • The Muslim Expert app includes all morning azkar with Arabic text, transliteration, and built-in digital tasbih

10 Morning Azkar to Recite Every Day

1. Ayat al-Kursi — The Verse of the Throne

Translation: "Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth..." (Quran 2:255)

Source: Quran 2:255. Recitation after each obligatory prayer — Nasai, authenticated by Al-Albani (Silsila Sahiha no. 972).

Benefit: The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing will prevent him from entering Paradise except death. (Nasai, Silsila Sahiha no. 972)

2. Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas — The Three Quls (×3)

Qul huwa Allahu ahad, Allahu as-samad, lam yalid wa lam yulad, wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad.

Qul a'udhu bi-rabb il-falaq, min sharri ma khalaq, wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab, wa min sharrin-naffathati fil-'uqad, wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad.

3. The Morning Declaration — "Asbahna"

Source: Muslim no. 2720, Abu Dawud no. 5077.

Benefit: Declaring Allah's sovereignty at the start of every day reorients the soul. It is an act of tawakkul (reliance on Allah) that opens the day with gratitude and correct perspective.

4. Sayyid al-Istighfar — The Master of Seeking Forgiveness

Translation: "O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no deity but You. You created me and I am Your servant. I am upon Your covenant and promise to the best of my ability. FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions About Morning Azkar

When exactly should the morning azkar be recited?

The morning azkar (adhkar as-sabah) are recited after the Fajr prayer, until the sun has fully risen. Some scholars extend this window until midday. The essential thing is to recite them in the first half of the day. If you forget, you may recite them later, but the ideal time is right after Fajr in the quiet of the morning.

Do you need to be in a state of ritual purity (wudu) to recite morning azkar?

Ritual purity (wudu) is not a strict condition for reciting morning azkar. These invocations are dhikr, not ritual prayer. You may recite them without ablution. However, being in a state of purity adds depth of presence and is recommended. This is especially true when reciting Ayat al-Kursi or Quranic surahs.

Can you recite morning azkar in English if you don't know Arabic?

It is preferable to recite azkar in Arabic, as that is the language in which the Prophet ﷺ transmitted them. However, understanding their meaning is equally essential. Read the English translation to know what you are saying, then recite in Arabic. With regular practice, the Arabic formulas become natural. What matters most is the presence of the heart (khushu').

What if you miss your morning azkar?

If you forget your morning azkar, recite them as soon as you remember, within the first half of the day. If the day is already well advanced, some scholars advise not making them up and instead beginning the evening azkar at their proper time. The important thing is to return to the practice the next day. Consistency (mudawama) is more valuable than occasional completeness.

May these azkar be a source of protection, peace, and closeness to Allah for you. Baraka Allahu fikum.
